As the U.S. women's national hockey team boycott of next week's IIHF world championships extended to a ninth day, CNN Money posted more details today on USA Hockey's inequitable treatment of its men's and women's national teams. Quoting from player handbooks for 2013 and 2014, an Olympic year, CNN listed these examples: USA Hockey paid for the men's national team to fly business class and receive disability insurance; the women did not; USA Hockey also paid the transportation costs for each male player to bring a guest who was permitted to stay for the duration of the championships in the players' hotel room, and received breakfast, game tickets and an apparel package. Women players had to room together and were not permitted to bring guests. Previously the players had shown USA Hockey also spends $4.9 million on its boys developmental program and league and virtually nothing on the girls teams,

The Flame of Hope arrives in Schladming, Austria to officially start the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games. Athletes, coaches, political dignitaries and world-renowned artists and entertainers shined in the rain to celebrate the inspiration these athletes provide. Cold rain fell throughout the three-hour Opening Ceremony, but not a spirit was dampened and hearts were warm.

USA Wrestling said in a statement Friday morning it has not yet received official word that the team will not be allowed to compete at the Freestyle World Cup in Iran later this month. On Friday morning an Iranian news outlet quoted the country's foreign ministry spokesman in saying that the 16th visit of American wrestlers to Iran had been opposed in response to President Donald Trump's executive order forbidding visas for Iranians. The US was scheduled to depart Feb. 8. "If these reports are true, USA Wrestling is extremely disappointed about this, which we believe would be an unacceptable situation," the US statement said. "Wrestling is about competition and goodwill though sport and is no place for politics."

There is no formal meeting planned between Rene Fasel and the NHL regarding the Olympics this weekend but since the IIHF president is scheduled to be here for all-star, there's a chance for an impromptu chat possibly with Gary Bettman and Bill Daly...

USA Swimming and USOC announce sanctions for gas station incident in Rio. Ryan Lochte suspended 10 months, making him ineligible for 2017 World Championships. Also loses 25k gold medal bonus, athlete funding and is required to complete 20 hours of community service. Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen suspended four months without athlete funding. Bentz required to complete 10 hours of community service since he was underage and out past curfew in Rio. And none of the swimmers will be part of the US delegation that will visit the White House later this month. The sanctions have no bearing on the college eligibility of Bentz, who swims at Georgia, or Conger, a junior at Texas.
