While it's unusual for someone in Tom Gamble's position (assistant general manager) to depart at this time of year, the 49ers were clearly already moving in a different direction. In the past few weeks, new GM John Lynch hired Adam Peters as his vice president of player personnel and Martin Mayhew as his senior personnel executive. Gamble's departure would seem to leave door open for Mayhew to eventually get a different title.

49ers assistant general manager Tom Gamble is leaving the organization, the team announced Wednesday afternoon. "The 49ers organization has tremendous respect and appreciation for Tom Gamble and his many years of service," GM John Lynch said in a statement. "He is a class act who has helped a great deal in this transition, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him. After working together over the last month, Tom and I agreed that it would be in both of our best interests for him to pursue other opportunities. Tom is a true professional and we wish him and his family great success in the future."

Jay Cutler at QB for 49ers in 2017?

The NFL's quarterback carousel is just starting to get going, but it's never too early to peer into our crystal ball. The 49ers will have other options, but Cutler would be a good fit if they go the short-term veteran route.

49ers could use complement to Carlos Hyde

Carlos Hyde is the 49ers' best skill position player. But Kyle Shanahan likes to use multiple running backs, so San Francisco should be in the market.

The 49ers addition of DeMeco Ryans as defensive quality control coach is an interesting one. Ryans played for the Houston Texans when Kyle Shanahan was there as offensive coordinator and stopped playing after the 2015 season. He's a former first-team All Pro linebacker. This is his first coaching job in the NFL.

As expected, the 49ers officially named John Benton as their offensive line coach on Tuesday. Benton was the last major hire needed for coach Kyle Shanahan's staff. The team also added six more coaches in assistant roles. Those coaches are: Daniel Bullocks | Assistant Defensive Backs Michael Clay | Strength & Conditioning Assistant Stan Kwan | Assistant Special Teams Vince Oghobaase | Assistant Defensive Line DeMeco Ryans | Defensive Quality Control Adam Stenavich | Assistant Offensive Line
