Updating further on 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman's shoulder issue that kept him out of the latter part of practice. He says it was just a stinger, something that he has had before and is fairly normal. Bowman said he could have gone back in if needed.

49ers play of the day for practice 15: Things finally boiled over after a relatively peaceful practice with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday. It happened when quarterback Brian Hoyer's pass intended for receiver Jeremy Kerley bounced off Kerley and into the hands of a Broncos defender. On the ensuing return, Niners receiver Pierre Garcon and Kerley started mixing it up with Broncos defensive backs including Chris Harris Jr. and it escalated into a bigger issue that took some time for the side to be separated. It was the first of a handful of skirmishes on the day.

Overheard at 49ers' practice 15: "He's pissed because he's getting beat." -- Linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong after a small scuffle broke out between Niners pass rusher Pita Taumoepenu and Broncos OT Donald Stephenson. Taumoepenu has come on a bit in recent days and was having success getting to the quarterback in team drills. Things got a bit chippy for the next couple of plays but didn't escalate to the level of some of the fights earlier in practice.

49ers rookie report from practice 15: Coach Kyle Shanahan said after Thursday's practice that rookie QB C.J. Beathard will get the first chance to work with the No. 2 offense against Denver on Saturday night. Beathard was third in the pecking order last week in Kansas City but he's been pushing Matt Barkley for the No. 2 job. Beathard will likely play into the second half.

49ers LB Reuben Foster has what team is calling a "mild" sprain of the AC joint in his surgically repaired shoulder. The new injury is different than the rotator cuff one he suffered previously and is not expected to keep him out for a lengthy period of time. He's expected to participate in today's practice in a limited basis.

Rookie report from 49ers practice 14: Undrafted rookie RB Matt Breida continues to make his mark on this camp, doing so today against Denver's defense. Breida had a couple of runs in team drills where he squeezed through a some tight spots and took off for big gains. He still looks right at home in any situation. ... TE Cole Hikutini has been quiet in recent days but came up with a couple plays against the Broncos on Wednesday. He's still in the mix in a close battle at tight end.
