The Raiders announced they have waived defensive end Kony Ealy from the active roster as well as linebacker James Cowser from the practice squad. Ealy signed with Oakland last week but was a curious healthy scratch from Sunday's game against the Chargers.

Gruden: 'I feel Mark's pain' about lousy season

"I feel Mark's pain," said Raiders coach Jon Gruden, whose team is 1-8 in his first season back with the franchise. "It's tough, man, we want to win."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Joke I heard in the parking lot today: What did Jon Gruden say when he got those three first-round picks? ‘Tanks.' Get it? No, the Raiders are not tanking the season, but after a 20-6 loss to the Chargers, Oakland is 1-8 and heading into a game at Arizona next week that should go a long way toward deciding the No. 1 overall draft pick come next April. And if you're looking for a snapshot into this season, look no further than Derek Carr, under enormous pressure, throwing the ball away on 4th and 5 from the Chargers' 19-yard line while down 14 points and with 4:10 remaining. Then there's this: the Raiders have been outscored by a combined 75-9 since going up 28-21 against the Indianapolis Colts in the third quarter in Oct. 28.

All it took was one mistake by the Raiders to wake up the Chargers, and Derek Carr's fumble on a sack just outside of the red zone was the play. Oakland had been dominating Los Angeles, with 165 yards of offense to the Chargers' six yards on six plays, and then Melvin Ingram got the strip sack and Corey Liuget scooped the ball. The Chargers' 10-3 halftime lead is seemingly a sign of more things to come in the second half.

While pass protection is starting to break down for the Raiders -- Derek Carr has been sacked two times and lost a fumble -- the offensive line is holding up well in the run game. Per ESPN Stats & Information, the Raiders already have 88 rush yards before contact, their most in a game in the last two seasons.

After failing to punch the ball in on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line, the Raiders have now scored a touchdown on just 54 percent of goal-to-go drives, the second-worst percentage in the NFL, behind the Chargers (50 percent), per ESPN Stats & Information. The drive was helped, of course, by punter Johnny Townsend's 42-yard run on a fake. Townsend, a fifth-round draft pick, is averaging 41.9 yards per punt.

Raiders handing out masks because of fires

With Northern California's deadly Camp Fire raging just a few hours north and a lingering smell of charcoal in the air, the Raiders made masks available to those who wanted them as they entered Oakland Coliseum.

No D/ST in history has finished a season with a negative fantasy point total. This season, two teams have negative points through eight games: The Oakland Raiders (minus-3) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (minus-2). Worst seasonal D/ST performances: 11 Baltimore Colts, 1981 17 Cleveland Browns, 2016 24 Denver Broncos, 2010 25 San Francisco 49ers, 2016 25 Detroit Lions, 2008

Wildfires cancel Rams practice, limit Raiders

The Rams had to cancel their practice Friday because of the Woolsey Fire, and the Raiders were limited to just a walkthrough because of the Camp Fire in Northern California.

Defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, who began the season on the PUP list after tearing an ACL in last season's final game, will not make his season debut Sunday against the Chargers. Rather, coach Jon Gruden said Vanderdoes, who only recently started practicing, would likely play at Arizona next week. The Raiders have to either activate Vanderdoes to the 53-man roster or place him on season-ending Injured Reserve soon. "If they want me to dominate the run game, I'll do that," Vanderdoes told ESPN.com recently. "If they want me to play on passing downs, I'll do that. Whatever they want me to do, I'm down for it." Vanderdoes, a third-round pick in 2017, started 13 of 16 games as a rookie at left defensive tackle last year and had 18 tackles, with two stuffs.

Jon Gruden, when asked if he thought the poor air quality from the Northern California fires might affect the location of Sunday's game against the Chargers: "I don't know. I just hope that the fires go away. I'm more concerned about a lot of people that are impacted by this...let's hope that this ends fast."

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

The Raiders have changed today's practice to a walkthrough, due to poor air quality from the nearby wildfires. The Raiders play host to the Chargers on Sunday and air quality was an issue when they faced them in Oakland last year, due to area fires.

No changes to the Raiders' injury report, as five of their offensive linemen, including four starters in LT Kolton Miller, LG Kelechi Osemele, C Rodney Hudson and RG Gabe Jackson, remain on the list.

Woodson: Chargers have too much for Raiders (0:55)

Paul Gutierrez ESPN Staff Writer

Not only is rookie left tackle Kolton Miller still nursing a sprained right knee, he is also wearing a bulky brace on his right elbow. He was LIMITED in practice Wednesday and if he cannot play against the Chargers, does Oakland move left guard Kelechi Osemele out to left tackle again, as it did for a few snaps at the 49ers and who is also dealing with a right knee injury, or do the Raiders play David Sharpe, who just re-signed with Oakland last week?
