Proposal allows teams to hire coaches quicker

A policy change would allow teams to formalize head coaching hires when the coach's original team is playing in the postseason, avoiding the predicament faced by the Colts last month after Josh McDaniels decided to remain on the Patriots' staff.

Mewhort started all 45 games he appeared during his first four seasons with Colts. Injuries, though, limited Mewhort to a total of 15 games the past two seasons. Mewhort is the second offensive lineman the Colts have signed this week. They also signed guard/center Matt Slauson on Tuesday.

I've said all along that the Colts, who don't need a quarterback, were in a great position to trade down in this draft. Moving back to No. 6 overall in the deal with the Jets still allows Indianapolis to take the best player available. Could top pass-rusher Bradley Chubb be on the board there? Indianapolis also adds two second-round picks this year (and one in 2019) to fill out a roster badly in need of talent.

Colts GM Chris Ballard isn't playing when it comes to building the roster through the draft. The Colts have acquired the sixth overall, 37th overall and 49th overall picks in this year's draft and a 2nd round pick in the 2019 draft from the New York Jets for the third overall pick in this year's draft.
