After the four signings from their own practice squad this week, the Broncos have nine rookies on today's roster against the Chargers and that doesn't include two players -- wide receiver Hunter Sharp and center Dillon Day -- who have spent time on a practice squad before this season.

Broncos rookie wide receiver Hunter Sharp is expected to return punts today against the Chargers. The Broncos like what they saw from Sharp, who was on the team's practice squad until Wednesday, in training camp. He returned 10 punts as a senior at Utah State in '15 -- 6.4 per return average -- and had a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD that year. Broncos special teams coordinator Brock Olivo on Sharp this week: "Hunter had a great preseason for us. He is a tough kid, he ran down there and stuck his face in there on kickoff. He made plays all over the field, not only as a returner but as a core special teams player. We're excited about Hunter, no question.''

FPI: Bolts have significant edge over Broncos

Denver won the teams' Week 1 meeting and is a game and a half up in the standings, but ESPN's FPI gives L.A. about a 3-2 advantage in Sunday's rematch. That said, the Chargers are 0-2 when favored by FPI this season.

Denver Broncos coach Vance Joseph has said he considers linebacker Corey Nelson "a starter'' because of all of the roles Nelson has on defense and special teams. However, the Broncos now have to find others to fill all of those roles as Nelson is headed to injured reserve with an elbow injury. Nelson will have surgery Monday to repair an injury he suffered in Thursday's practice. The Broncos will sign rookie linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams off their practice squad Saturday. "Corey's had a great year, both on defense and on special teams,'' Joseph said. "That's a big loss for us, but it happens.'

For the Broncos tackle Menelik Watson (calf) not on field for practice. The most likely move, if Watson can't play Sunday against the Chargers, would be for the Broncos to play Donald Stephenson at right tackle. The Broncos are still at 52 players on the roster, so have an open spot.

For Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas back in practice Thursday. Coach Vance Joseph has said he expects Thomas to play Sunday against the Chargers.

For the Broncos linebacker Shane Ray (wrist) is also back to practice for the first time since the first week of training camp. He is slated to play Oct. 30 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Among those sitting out today are wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who had his lower leg X-rayed during Sunday night's game, tackle Menelik Watson (calf) and tight end A.J. Derby. Linebacker Brandon Marshall, cornerback Aqib Talib, running back Jamaal Charles and nose tackle Domata Peko were also not participating. Talib, Charles and Peko have been getting Wednesdays off.

For the Broncos rookie tight end Jake Butt is practicing for the first time. The Broncos have a 21-day window to move him to the active roster.

NFL Insiders predict: Chargers to upset Broncos?

When these teams met in Week 1, Los Angeles fell just short of a comeback win. The Bolts are hosts this time around, and a two-game winning streak seems to have them back on track after an 0-4 start.

The Broncos have formally signed wide receiver Hunter Sharp to the roster from their practice squad this morning . And wide receiver River Cracraft, who was one of four wide receivers the team worked out Tuesday, was signed to fill that practice squad spot. The Broncos still have one roster spot open after guard Billy Turner to injured reserve Tuesday.
