FPI: Falcons on outside looking in

Of the three NFC South teams with just two losses so far, it's the defending NFC champs -- not the Panthers or Saints -- that hold the lowest odds of reaching the postseason in ESPN's FPI. Things have changed dramatically from even a week ago, when FPI had the Falcons and Panthers neck-and-neck for the NFC South crown.

Falcons fifth-round pick Brian Hill, waived over the weekend, has just re-signed to the team's practice squad.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn said the Super Bowl has not been an everyday motivation for his team. Of course, it's a source of frustration but it's not a motivating factor, he said.

``No,'' Dan Quinn said when asked if he's satisfied with how much Julio Jones is getting the ball. ``No i'm not.'' Quinn mentioned that more offensive plays will help that situation, with Jones being such a dynamic player.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn said there were no setbacks from the players that were banged up leading into the Dolphins' game such as Julio Jones (hip flexor), Vic Beasley Jr. (hamstring). Expects Mohamed Sanu (hamstring) and Courtney Upshaw (ankle, knee) to get some practice time.

Vote: The best and worst from Sunday in the NFL

Which performance from Sunday in the NFL stood out the most? What was the biggest surprise? And how will the Packers fare without their quarterback?

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Falcons pass-rusher Vic Beasley Jr., who returned from a hamstring injury Sunday, played 26 of 67 defensive snaps in the loss to the Dolphins. Didn't start because Falcons were in big base defense, not nickel. Beasley had no sacks, no quarterback hits, and one assisted tackle.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Julio Jones played 45 of 57 offensive snaps coming off a hip flexor injury in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. The Falcons WR caught six passes for 72 yards on seven targets. Tight end Austin Hooper led the Falcons with seven catches (48 yards) on nine targets and played 52 of 57 snaps.

What happened to Falcons' running game?

Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman rushed 12 times for 82 yards in the first half, averaging more than 5 yards before contact per rush. But after the half, Freeman and Coleman totaled 18 yards rushing on just six carries, and averaged minus-0.33 yards before contact per rush. The Dolphins entered the week allowing 1.5 yards before contact per rush, third best in the NFL. (ESPN Stats & Info)

Falcons' Grady Jarrett on his roughing the passer penalty that set up a Dolphins' touchdown: ``At the end of the day, I never want to put my team in a situation like that, and I definitely don't want anyone to ever think that I did something dirty, but in the heat of it, it looked good to me, and it turned out that it wasn't, and they ended up scoring. We just have to go back to work and get back on track.”

Falcons QB Matt Ryan on the interception that ended the game, where he tried to fit the ball to tight end Austin Hooper between two defenders: ``I felt like I made the right read in that situation, put it where I wanted to, and that's how the game goes sometimes. I'm disappointed with it, but we're going to continue to battle, and I think we'll be better for it and hopefully more mentally and physically tough as a football team moving forward.”
