The Oscars commercials are so much smarter, more creative and at times in touch w the human spirit than the overrated junk Super Bowl ads.

Safety Eric Berry said he was hopeful he could come to an agreement on a long-term contract with the Chiefs before Wednesday's deadline for teams to designate franchise players. "I'm just being patient because you never know . . . I'm not getting my hopes up," Berry said. Berry said he hasn't changed his earlier stance that he wouldn't play with the Chiefs for the second straight season on the franchise tag. "I still stand by that," Berry said.

Mario Addison said he believes he can be an every down end for the Panthers, but will play whatever role the team wants. He is happy with his new three-year deal. "We met halfway in a good agreement that is a really fair deal for me,'' Addison said. "I made my name here. I came here in 2012 and worked my way up.''

In 2014, when the Panthers gave defensive end Mario Addison a two-year extension, he celebrated with a trip to Puerto Rico in which he almost drowned when he fell of a jet ski. He's planning a trip to Germany to celebrate his new three-year deal. "No jet skis. No water,'' Addison said. "I'm not dealing with any water until I learn how to swim.'' Good decision.

The Chiefs also announced former WR Carlos Carson as this year's entrant to the team's Hall of Fame. Carson played for the Chiefs from 1980 through 1989. He's eighth in the franchise record book in catches (352), fifth in receiving yards (6,360) and tied for seventh in receiving TDs (33).

The Chiefs are announcing at the moment Tyreek Hill as their rookie of the year and Eric Berry as their Most Valuable Player. Obvious choice in the case of Hill. Good choice in the case of Berry. Hill was his only strong competition.

The Panthers have signed DE Mario Addison to a three-year deal. He will be 30 this year but he led the team with 9.5 sacks this past season and has been the most consistent pass rusher the past three years. Better safe than sorry by keeping him.
