Explaining why they re-signed PR/WR Kalif Raymond to the practice squad after his costly muff on Sunday, Jets coach Todd Bowles said they wanted to keep working with him because he's "got some tools to develop." He was referring to Raymond's receiving ability, not just punt returning. Bowles ruled out the possibility of signing Raymond to the roster and using him on Sunday. They have a "handful" of candidates to return punts and kickoffs, per special teams coach Brant Boyer. Jeremy Kerley and Elijah McGuire are thought to be among the candidates.

Quarterback Cam Newton threw lightly on the side today and did all the other non-throwing drills in practice. But as Panthers coach Ron Rivera reminded, this is the new norm for the 2015 NFL MVP to get ready for games each week. “You want to get him out there,'' Rivera said. “But what you don't want to do is not for the arm to have a chance to rest. Again, he went through a surgery. . . . It's one of those things, rest is probably the best thing.''

James Walker ESPN Staff Writer

Dolphins CB Byron Maxwell estimated he was 10 pounds heavier than normal last week because he couldn't get a good sweat going during practices in Southern California. He's happy to be back in the humidity of South Florida and feels back to normal.

Jeff Legwold ESPN Senior Writer

For Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles it will be important for the team's medical staff to see how he handles the increased activity he has today. He will be evaluated Friday morning along with the team's other players who are currently receiving treatment.

Jenna Laine ESPN Staff Writer

Dirk Koetter said that the flu is still a concern with the Bucs. He said they had another player diagnosed with it today, so that player can't even be in the building. We'll have a new injury report here shortly.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis couldn't think of one play Drew Brees has made that stands out, probably because the Saints quarterback makes so many each week.

Through two games, the Texans' pass defense has held opposing quarterbacks to an average completion percentage of 55 percent for 169 yards, both ranked in the top 6 in the league, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Of course, that's against Blake Bortles and Andy Dalton, so Sunday vs. the Patriots will be a bigger test.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Kyle Larsen looks like he will replace Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil again this week with Kalil missing the past two practices with a neck injury that kept him from playing this past Sunday. And yes, Larsen has his own nickname from quarterback Cam Newton. He's "Bucky Larson" from the movie "Born to Be a Star." Let Larsen explain.
