With Nick Mangold's pending release, I believe there are only 11 players out of the 255 drafted in 2006 still with the team that drafted them: Chad Greenway (Vikings), Tamba Hali (Chiefs), Marcedes Lewis (Jaguars), Andrew Whitworth (Bengals), Jahri Evans (Saints), Stephen Gostkowski (Patriots), Domata Peko (Bengals), Kyle Williams (Bills), Kedric Golston (Redskins), Sam Koch (Ravens), Zach Strief (Saints). With many of these players about to be free agents, or even retire, that number could dwindle even more come March.

No surprise here: The Jets are in full housecleaning mode. They're dumping salary and trying to get younger. Nick Mangold, 33, had a $9.1 million cap charge in the final year of his contract. The entire amount will be cleared from the cap. Mangold, one of the most accomplished players in team history, was respected from the moment he walked in the door in 2006. But he missed eight games last season due to an ankle injury that didn't heal as quickly as he had hoped. You're up, Wesley Johnson. Good luck.

New 49ers DT Earl Mitchell on conference call with Bay Area media discussed what drew him to San Francisco. He said he felt like Niners are building a "family type" of environment that he wanted to be a part of. In addition, he has ties to new defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina and defensive quality control coach DeMeco Ryans from their shared time in Houston.

Jets C Nick Mangold, their longest tenured player, announced on Twitter that "my time as a New York has come to an end." Ending an era. A $9.1 million cap savings for the Jets.

The 49ers officially announced the four-year deal for DT Earl Mitchell on Saturday morning. Mitchell agreed to terms on the contract, which is worth $16 million total on Friday afternoon. "As soon as Earl hit the open market, he became a priority for us to sign," said 49ers General Manager John Lynch. "A man of high character, he represents everything we want to be as a football team. Earl is a tone-setter who plays the game with a tremendous passion and the effort necessary to win in this league. We believe those qualities are contagious and will help to make our team stronger. We look forward to the impact Earl will have on the field, in the locker room and in our community."

"Situational football" the old but new catchphrase when talking #NFL?...plenty of those types of players that make this '17 draft exciting.

Mayor of Inglewood, James T Butts says adding a basketball arena for the Clippers could delay the opening of the Rams football stadium in Inglewood by at least 18 months. "To introduce another element in it would require city approval and an EIR (environmental impact report) and that would set the project back by 18 months to two years, Butts told ESPN. "To add a basketball arena in there would stop everything right now."

The 49ers continued a busy Friday by agreeing to terms on a four-year contract with DT Earl Mitchell. Mitchell will be expected to help bolster a run defense that was worst in the NFL and in franchise history a year ago.

Former Miami Dolphins' DT Earl Mitchell plans to sign with 49ers, per league source. Big pickup before league year begins.
