With a banged up secondary and a returning to full strength linebacker corps, the 49ers released LB Terence Garvin and promoted DB Tyvis Powell from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday. The Niners got LBs Reuben Foster (suspension) and Malcolm Smith (hamstring) back in the fold, making Garvin expendable.

Julio Jones has never gone more than 69 regular-season targets without scoring a touchdown. Currently at 111 and counting.

Some good on the Patriots' injury front on Saturday, as starting right tackle Marcus Cannon (calf) and core special teams player Nate Ebner (hip) both made the trip to Detroit. Cannon and Ebner are listed as questionable on the team's injury report, giving them a 50-50 chance of playing.

Vita Vea is officially OUT versus the Steelers. Beau Allen is out too. The Bucs are very thin at defensive tackle with Gerald McCoy and Jerel Worthy there. Will Gholston's gonna have to play a lot of snaps inside too.

With recent talk linking Colin Kaepernick to the Raiders, here's what Jon Gruden said at the NFL owners meetings in March when I asked him about Kaepernick: “I think there's a lot of intrigue there. His performance on the field wasn't very good, on tape. I think, Robert Griffin, a rookie of the year, surprised he's out there. Tim Tebow, takes a team to the playoffs, there's some surprise that he never came back. You know, Johnny Manziel, he's out there. Back to Kaepernick, you know he got beat out by (Blaine) Gabbert, to start the (2016) season. I think that says something. (But) I am surprised he's not in camp with somebody. He probably will be soon.”

The Steelers might be shaking up the cornerback lineup for Monday Night Football. Veteran Coty Sensabaugh confirmed he received some first-team reps Saturday, making him a potential starter over Artie Burns at the outside spot opposite Joe Haden. Sensabaugh isn't sure about his exact role for the Bucs game but "just going with the program.”

WR/KR Kaelin Clay (ankle) didn't travel with the team to Houston. He was downgraded to out. Don't be surprised to see Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard on some punt returns. Cody Latimer will continue to handle kickoffs.

The Panthers signed cornerback Josh Hawkins to the active roster from the practice squad. He takes the roster spot left open when safety Da'Norris Searcy was placed on IR after his second concussion in a month.

Bucs' Dirk Koetter on Vita Vea: "When you've been out for seven weeks -- conditioning indoors is different than playing football outdoors, when you've got bodies around your legs and everything. There's no lack of 'want to' or anything like that -- we've gotta be reasonable with how much time we give him...we'll see." Vea lost 15 pounds during his recovery and that's a weight they feel good about.
