USC coach Clay Helton reported some good news on second-team All-Pac-12 tackle Chad Wheeler, who has not practiced in two weeks due to plantar fasciitis. Wheeler did not report any pain after running on a modified treadmill, but it's still unclear if he'll be ready to play against Alabama. China Edoga would likely start at left tackle if Wheeler is unable to go.

There's some interesting nuance to Stanford's QB situation. David Shaw named Ryan Burns the starter, but he also said that Keller Chryst will get playing time against Kansas State. This differs from the Cardinal's last QB transition in 2012. That year, Shaw tapped Josh Nunes as the exclusive guy at the start of the season. Eventual starter Kevin Hogan did not begin seeing playing time until later in the year.

Good day meeting with players and coaches at Mississippi State. Coach Dan Mullen thinks he might have his most unproven team he's had in Starkville. There's been a trickle down effect with depth at WR and LB with departures. DC Peter Sirmon echoed those sentiments saying "it'll be a challenge" working in some areas of this defense because of inexperience, not just youth

This week, two Pac-12 quarterbacks from the Class of 2013 have been named starters - Max Browne at USC and Ryan Burns at Stanford. That year, neither program offered Jared Goff, who the Los Angeles Rams selected No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. Goff was in contact with Stanford during the recruiting process, but the Cardinal stopped recruiting him once Burns committed.

Spoke with Oregon fifth year senior WR Dwayne Stanford. I asked for his breakdown of the DBs and QBs through camp (with the depth chart coming out in the next few days. On the defensive backs: He said he has been impressed with Ugo Amadi, Arrion Springs and Malik Lovette. When asked which guy defends him best, he joked that they've all done an "equally bad job." On the quarterbacks: Stanford said Dalota Prukop has really taken ahold of the offense. He has been surprised with true freshman Justin Herbert. Said he thought he looked pretty good this summer but had no idea how well he'd play this fall.

Trace McSorley is Penn State's new starting QB, coach James Franklin announced moments ago. The redshirt sophomore beat out Tommy Stevens for the job. McSorley doesn't have anything near the arm of last year's starter, Christian Hackenberg, but he can make plays with his legs.

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen says he plans to announce a starter at QB for the opener against South Alabama early next week. He has a pretty good idea who it will be, but that doesn't mean the job is permanently his. "It's sorting itself out. To this day, no one has jumped up and separated himself to be the guy. I have a good idea where I'm at and who's going to be the starter ... but I'm going to play more than one in the first game. I can guarantee you that." Nick Fitzgerald, Damian Williams and Nick Tino are all battling for the starting spot.

Ohio State defensive end Sam Hubbard, still close with Joey Bosa, said it's been tough on his friend not to be on the field with the Chargers. "I know he's heartbroken," Hubbard said. "He's a football player, and he wants to play football."

Larry Fedora on the different running styles of current QB Mitch Trubisky and former QB Marquise Williams: "If you ran them in a race, Mitch would probably win a flat-out foot race, but I don't anticipate him being that physical style of runner that Marquise was." North Carolina has 2,914 non-sack rushing yards from its QB the last 3 years, fourth-most in Power 5.

ACC commissioner John Swofford said he does not know which way the conference scheduling vote will go once it is taken. If the vote is deadlocked at 7-7, the conference would remain at eight conference games. "It's very hard to handicap that because of the closeness of the actual votes and the straw votes that we've had over the years on this issue," Swofford said. "The only prediction I would make is whatever the vote is, it's probably going to be close unless we end up voting on something that's a little different than what's on the table at the moment."

Baylor DB Travon Blanchard is expected to miss the Bears' Sept. 2 opener against Northwestern State after undergoing minor knee surgery today. Blanchard is one of the team's best players and leaders on defense. Expect senior Patrick Levels to fill in for Blanchard in the hybrid "Bear" safety/linebacker role.

ACC commissioner John Swofford said Wednesday the ongoing discussion about future conference scheduling would be on the agenda when the athletic directors meet again in October, but was unsure whether a vote would be taken. ADs must decide by December whether to stay at eight conference games with the addition of two Power 5 nonconference games, or move to nine conference games plus one Power 5 nonconference opponent. The ACC would begin using the new scheduling model in 2019, when the ACC Network debuts.

Florida State's second scrimmage was just average, coach Jimbo Fisher said. Before camp opened, Fisher talked about the need for the players around Deondre Francois to step up, but Fisher wasn't enthusiastic about the receivers Wednesday. He said right now they have bodies at the position they can throw to but not options. Fisher has been hard on his receivers the last two seasons.
