Texas LB Malik Jefferson, the Big 12 preseason Defensive Player of the Year, was asked to describe where his game is at entering his sophomore year. The word he chose: wiser. He feels all caught up to the speed and pressures of the college game now. Will he get to pass rush more this year? "We'll see," Jefferson said. "You know we like to blitz."

UCLA held Day 2 of its Texas A&M prep on Tuesday, but while coach Jim Mora wasn't ready to talking A&M specifics, he made it clear the excitement is growing in anticipation of the Sept. 3 opener. "Going to SEC country in front of 100,000-plus people on a hot Saturday afternoon and show that we're capable of competing and playing in that environment and thriving," he said.

Texas coach Charlie Strong said he would only share his decision on the Tyrone Swoopes-Shane Buechele quarterback battle with his Texas players. So did he? "No he hasn't," LB Malik Jefferson said. "I saw (Strong said) that. I have no idea as well."

Texas' Jerrod Heard moved from QB to WR in practice this month. He's been studying receivers in college and in the pros and says he's going to be an all-purpose "athlete" this season.

Texas QB-turned-WR Jerrod Heard offered no hints on the still undecided quarterback battle: "I do not personally know the starter, before y'all even ask me.

Wisconsin offensive lineman Dan Voltz has been forced to retire due to injuries, Badgers coach Paul Chryst announced Tuesday. Voltz was coming back from a torn ACL and was expected to start at left guard. He had 27 starts in his career and was considered one of the top linemen in the Big Ten. It's a huge blow to Wisconsin's young line less than two weeks before the opener against LSU. The Badgers' projected line starters now have a combined 34 starts.

Utah announced that it has partially reinstated wide receiver Cory Butler-Byrd, effective immediately. He will be able to participate in practices and team activities, but can't compete in games. He pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief after authorities say he damaged a university police patrol car and building last month.

Michigan State defensive line coach Ron Burton might have the best nickname for All-America candidate Malik McDowell: Gumby. "He's flexible, man," Spartans co-defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett said. "It's uncanny how he can do what he does. Just a different type guy, how flexible and wiry he is. You watch the practice film and some Gumby stuff happens." McDowell can play both line positions but might best serve MSU as an edge rusher this season.

The CFP selection committee is meeting today through Thursday in Dana Point, Calif., for their final in-person meetings of the summer. They will likely review the protocol, go through a mock ranking and assign conference point persons to each league. I assume the official recusals will also be announced. There are three new committee members (now that Lloyd Carr has stepped down) and 12 total. Kirby Hocutt is the new chair. Their first official ranking is Nov. 1.
