Justin Crawford commands the respect of teammates at West Virginia because of his life experience and focus on reaching his goals. Away from the field, he's driven to provide for his family. "I commend him on that part of it," WVU running back coach Tony Dews said, "because there's a lot of guys his age -- and a lot of men even older -- that are out there and may not be as responsible as he is right now."

Justin Crawford, the Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year as a running back last season at West Virginia, said "there was no decision" to make about coming back to school as a senior in 2017. The married father of two and former juco star, who has helped mentor four younger siblings since the death of their father in 2009, wants to finish his job in Morgantown. It speaks to Crawford's tireless work ethic. "When everybody else is sitting at home, relaxing, you can be getting ahead," Crawford said Tuesday in his first interview session since arriving at WVU last summer. (The school restricts first-year players from talking to the media.)

USC QB Sam Darnold knows there is no avoiding the high expectations that he will face individually and the Trojans will face as a team. "You should embrace things like that," he said.

Alabama RB Bo Scarbrough has seen his workload build since the start of practice. "He's sort of gaining confidence," Saban said of Scarbrough, who was knocked out of the national title game with a leg injury. "Our goal for Bo is by the end of spring, he's fully confident that he can do everything he needs to do. Whether he ever scrimmages or is really something that we're not that concerned about."

Nick Saban may have a running QB in Jalen Hurts, but that doesn't mean he wants to push it this spring. "I don't think it's worth getting a guy hurt in practice trying to prove the point that we're going to make them a little tougher, especially at the quarterback position," Saban said. "We try to do it with some controlled drills so that they do get hit. We really have limited the quarterback runs in the spring and are really focused on trying to develop a better passing game."

Jimbo Fisher said he wouldn't want his underclassmen working out at pro day if it came in the middle of spring camp. He said it's not good for the team or player, who wouldn't be in combine shape and could be injured from practice. Fisher was one of the loudest advocates for a junior combine, but he wants it to happen in late April or May. A recent rule change allows programs to have up to five rising juniors perform at pro day. Florida State has several rising juniors who could be high picks, including Derwin James, who is considered a 2018 first-round lock.

Just a 0.5 sack separated DeMarcus Walker and the 2016 national leader, and his 16-sack senior season has him in the Day 2 range. A little final coaching from a Lions assistant -- more violence, the coach demanded -- as could help him break into the late first round.
