PG13 says Thunder were wise to gamble on him

While meeting with the Lakers during free agency was tempting, Paul George said Thursday that he knew several weeks before the process began on July 1 that he was going to sign a contract to remain with the Thunder.

Oklahoma City saves money by signing second round pick Hamidou Diallo and not signing a player to a veteran minimum contract. Diallo will come in at a cap hit of $838K and push the payroll in Oklahoma City to $149.6M and a current luxury tax bill of $93.2M. Signing a player with a cap hit of $1.5M would have cost Oklahoma City an additional $3.5M towards the luxury tax. The Thunder now have 16 players under contract, including Deonte Burton who was signed to a Two-Way contract.

Three-team deal sending Melo to Atlanta official

The three-team trade sending Anthony, Justin Anderson and a 2022 lottery protected first-round pick (via OKC) to the Hawks; Dennis Schroder and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot to the Thunder; and Mike Muscala to the 76ers, is official.

Royce Young ESPN Staff Writer

San Presti on adding Dennis Schröder: "Dennis provides us with another proven playmaker and someone that will only enhance the overall speed of our team."

Royce Young ESPN Staff Writer

The Carmelo Anthony trade is now official. "I want to take this opportunity to thank Carmelo Anthony and acknowledge his professionalism and contributions during his time with the Thunder," Sam Presti said. "Although his tenure was only one year, the fact that Melo is a part of our history is important to us. We appreciate Carmelo and his agent Leon Rose for their collaboration and communication as we worked to resolve the situation in a fashion that was suitable to everyone. We wish Melo and his family nothing but the best in the future."

The Celtics will save roughly $675K towards the luxury tax and $450K in salary by sending Abdel Nader to Oklahoma City and by not outright waiving the former second-round pick. The Celtics now have 14 guaranteed contracts and a tax bill of $3.8 million if Rodney Purvis is waived. Nader currently has $450K guaranteed that will become full ($1.4M) if he is not waived by August 1. Nader has a July 15 guaranteed date for 2019-20 ($1.62M) and 2020-21 ($1.75M). The Thunder add extra depth on the bench and cash to offset the salary for Nader.

Royce Young ESPN Staff Writer

The Thunder are trading recently acquired Rodney Purvis to Boston for Abdel Nader. Nader was set to be waived by the Celtics, but the Thunder set up a deal to acquire the 6-foot-6 forward. Nader is on a partially guaranteed deal.

Oklahoma City projects to save $2.6M towards the luxury tax after trading Dakari Johnson to Orlando. The savings will only incur if the Thunder sign one of their second round picks (if Rodney Purvis is waived) this year and not a player to the minimum exception.

Something to note even though the Thunder and Melo are going separate ways, OKC has deep appreciation for his professionalism/communication with them throughout the process. One example of the collaboration was the Thunder allowing Melo to meet with other teams/explore potential opportunities while still under contract, and Melo's agreement to waive his no trade clause if it expedited his release and helped the Thunder.
