Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said he expects to give some of his veteran players some good minutes for the first preseason game against the Shanghai Sharks on Sunday. D'Antoni wants the Rockets to develop some chemistry quickly but will use the final two preseason games as more of a dress rehearsal. "Give them a good run, see how the game goes," D'Antoni said Saturday. "I'm a believer we're there to get them better. They got to play with each other, we have a hard (regular season) schedule to start, so it's not like we can just kinda lull into it, we got to get them ready."

Sources: Motiejunas, Rockets not close on deal

Restricted free-agent power forward Donatas Motiejunas, who has until midnight Sunday to sign his qualifying offer from the Houston Rockets, remains far apart with the team on a new contract.

Rockets made it official today signing forward P.J. Hairston to a non-guaranteed contract. The Rockets don't expect Hairston to play much in the preseason, if anything he'll practice off to the side. He isn't expected to go to China with the Rockets next week.

Rockets guard James Harden said Friday the team hasn't talked about any potential protest during the national anthem for Sunday's scheduled preseason opener against the Shanghai Sharks. Players in the NFL, WNBA, women's soccer, college and high school football games have either taken a knee, raised their fist or worn T-shirts protesting police brutality against African-Americans. "Each and every guy has their own voice and own opinion on that subject," Harden said. "They will act accordingly." The league has a rule that every player must stand during the national anthem.

Trevor Ariza said the work the Rockets have put in on defense during a training camp practices has been strong. "That's something we put an emphasis on," Ariza said Friday. "We work on that every day, we drill it every day (and) when you do something every day, it becomes a habit and that's what we're on our way to." The Rockets hired Jeff Bzdelik as the defensive coordinator in a sense to improve a group that struggled last season in that area. "I think every coach approaches things differently, there's no one right way," "Ariza said. "He's done a lot of research a lot of studying and what he studies worked and you can't argue with that. That's what we're here to do is get better."

The Rockets signing of P.J. Hairston doesn't mean the team is close to signing restricted free agent power forward Donatas Motiejunas. According to a source, two sides haven't talked extensively in a month.

The Rockets signed forward PJ Hairston to a non guaranteed contract on Thursday according to a source. If Hairston doesn't make the 15-man roster the Rockets will retain his D-League rights. Last season for Memphis, Hairston averaged 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.

The Rockets are using forward Sam Dekker in many different spots during training camp practices. Dekker, last year's first-round pick, missed the majority of the season recovering from back surgery. Now healthy, Dekker has worked at both forward spots and shooting guard. "We get caught up in he's a small guy," coach Mike D'Antoni said of the 6-9 Dekker. "It's funny people say he's small because he's skilled. He can put the ball on the floor, he can run the floor but height wise he's the same. If he can guard the guy in the post, if he can do that, there's no reason why he can't play the four and get an advantage of being a skilled four."

In his previous head coaching stops, Mike D'Antoni has employed tight eight-and-nine man rotations. With the Rockets could the same occur? It's clear the Rockets have a surplus of young talented players in K.J. McDaniels, Montrezl Harrell and Sam Dekker who will compete for front court minutes. Of course, the Rockets have veterans Nene and Corey Brewer who should be among the first players off the bench after guard Eric Gordon. When and if the Rockets complete a deal with Donatas Motiejunas (restricted free agent) he will add to the rotation mix. "Traditionally I've been skewered because I've played seven or eight guys, I like that," D'Antioni said Wednesday. "I just think it's really important that my six, seventh and eighth man have good minutes that they feel are very comfortable." D'Antoni said he's open to a nine or ten man rotation if players are producing.

Newly signed power forward Ryan Anderson said during Rockets media day he saw more open looks during pickup games than during his four seasons with the Pelicans. The comment prompted some fans of the Pelicans to express some disappointment with Anderson on social media. "Just making a point I've been getting a lot of open looks," Anderson said when told about the Pels' fans displeasure. "In New Orleans a lot of teams would, especially when I was in that sixth man role, in a lot of different lineups, I would be the focal point and a lot of teams would try to shut me out. (Defenses) switching and they wouldn't let me get open looks. I think this offense is so imperative for the guards to get to the basket. All the attention will be on James (Harden) and that will take a lot off me. I was exaggerating a little bit."

After announcing James Harden will become the full-time point guard this upcoming season, Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said Tuesday Patrick Beverley will remain in the starting lineup. Beverley will move from point guard to shooting guard. The Rockets like to have either a strong defender or shooter who can create alongside Harden. In some situations, Eric Gordon will pair up with Harden. But at the start of games, Harden and Beverley will be on the court. "Oh yeah Pat can play off the ball and on the ball," D'Antoni said. "He's a great defensive player there's a lot of spots he can play."

The Houston Rockets have higher expectations for this upcoming season. The Westgate Sportsbook in Las Vegas had the Rockets' odds for wins at 41 ½. While not being told of what the odds are, Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni embraces a high win total. "When we got (Steve) Nash (in Phoenix) they picked us, maybe to make the eighth spot and we won 62 games, so you never know," D'Antoni said of the 2004-05 season. "We're shooting for the 62. We're not shooting for the eighth spot, if that's as good as we are then that's as good as we are. I think we're better than that. You could say we're in the middle but I think we're better than that."
