Mayor of Inglewood, James T Butts says adding a basketball arena for the Clippers could delay the opening of the Rams football stadium in Inglewood by at least 18 months. "To introduce another element in it would require city approval and an EIR (environmental impact report) and that would set the project back by 18 months to two years, Butts told ESPN. "To add a basketball arena in there would stop everything right now."

The Pelicans' waiving of Omri Casspi ends a long, tough week for the veteran swingman. Casspi seemed in line for a big opportunity under Pels coach Alvin Gentry, long an admirer of his game, after being traded from Sacramento with DeMarcus Cousins. But a 4-to-6 week recovery period after suffering a broken right thumb in his first game led to his waiver Friday. New Orleans is clearly all-in on the West's 8th-seed race, and could use an able body after limiting its rotation to essentially nine players Thursday.

Marc Stein ESPN Senior Writer

The Pelicans will sign Reggie Williams to a 10-day deal for the second time this season after newly acquired Omri Casspi suffered a broken thumb in his New Orleans debut, league sources tell ESPN. The Pels reluctantly made the decision to waive Casspi to create a roster spot, fearing that the minimum four weeks he'll miss to heal would leave them shorthanded on the wing as they try to secure the West's final playoff spot.

Kevin Pelton ESPN Staff Writer

I understand the New Orleans Pelicans feeling they couldn't leave a roster spot open in midst of a playoff race but waiving the injured Omri Casspi means forfeiting the ability to re-sign him this summer using Bird rights. The Pelicans will be over the cap if they re-sign point guard Jrue Holiday.

Victor Oladipo is out tonight with back spasms. Alex Abrines will start in his place.
