Carpenter ties MLB record with 3 HR, 2 doubles

Cardinals star Matt Carpenter had a historic game on Friday, crushing three home runs and two doubles in his team's 18-5 rout of the Cubs. He's just the second player in the modern era with three home runs and two doubles in the same game.

Unfortunately, Carpenter is out of the game, so his chance of a record-tying fourth home run and record-setting sixth extra-base hit won't happen. He settles for being the 11th player to get five extra-base hits in a game.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Have a day, Matt Carpenter! The Cardinals first baseman is 5-for-5 with three homers, two doubles and seven RBIs ... and it's only the sixth inning. With a 15-1 lead, the Cubs are going to a position player to pitch, giving Carpenter an even better chance at one of the best games in MLB history.

Fired Matheny: 'Nothing but gratitude' to Cards

Mike Matheny, who was fired by the Cardinals on Saturday, says he saw his dismissal coming, as conversations about the possibility began during the 2017 season.

Christina Kahrl MLB Staff Writer

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has been fired with his club at 47-46 and in danger of missing the postseason a third straight year, their worst stretch since missing the playoffs from 1997-1999. He leaves with a career .555 record, one NL pennant, and perhaps more than the usual second-guessing from fans. Also out, hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller.
