Spring setbacks thwarting NL contenders

Three teams from last season's playoff field are stumbling out of the gate. What's tripping up the Giants, Dodgers and Mets?

Los Dodgers lo hacen oficial: suben al abridor mexicano Julio Urías. Urías tendrá su primera apertura de la temporada 2017 (en Grandes Ligas) esta noche contra los Gigantes.

ESPN Stats and Information

The Dodgers' Julio Urías is scheduled to make his first start of the season today. In his first eight starts last season, Urías was 1-2 with a 4.95 ERA. In his final seven starts last season, Urías had a 1.36 ERA.

Corey Seager's solo shot off Johnny Cueto takes the crown for Wednesday's longest home run. Scott Schebler's 442-foot blast was part of a two-homer day, giving him 7 for the year, good for third in the NL. Ryan Schimpf rounds out the list with his clutch long ball against the Diamondbacks.

Mike Morse looked finished as a major leaguer after just eight at-bats last year with the Pirates. But the Giants have so many injuries in the outfield that he was called up on Wednesday and since this is baseball of course he hit a pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning to tie the Dodgers.

It's a fine line between hero and goat, as Dodgers 3B Justin Turner explains. He was picked off second base to end Monday's game against the Giants, but his aggressive base running Tuesday scored a run and put his team on top to stay.

Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw says he did not have his best stuff in Tuesday's victory over the rival Giants, but did not blame the sore calf that was hit by a comebacker in the first inning.

Doug Padilla ESPN Staff Writer

Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw fought through cramping in his calf early Tuesday in defeating the Giants. The calf issue started when he took a comebacker off his leg against the first batter of the game.

Clayton Kershaw buckled down to give up just one run over seven innings and the Dodgers held on for a 2-1 victory over the Giants. The Dodgers scored twice in the fourth inning on a Yasiel Puig single and an Adrian Gonzalez ground ball. Top prospect Cody Bellinger delivered his first hit, an infield single, while Kenley Jansen recorded a four-out save.

Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw gave up one run on six hits to the Giants over seven innings, with seven strikeouts. He now has a 2.29 ERA on the season and a 1.36 ERA lifetime at AT&T Park. He turned things over to reliever Pedro Baez with the Dodgers leading 2-1.

Dodgers LHP Grant Dayton threw one inning in a rehab outing at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, striking out the side. Dayton, on the DL with an intercostal strain, is expected to be activated on the Dodgers' next homestand.

After tweaking something in his right leg or foot in the third inning, Clayton Kershaw gave up a run to the Giants a half inning later. Since that third-inning RBI from Buster Posey, he has retired 13 of his last 15 batters, including 10 consecutive at one point.

Doug Padilla ESPN Staff Writer

In three at-bats of his major league debut so far, the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger popped out to shortstop, hit a line drive to right field and received an automatic intentional walk.
