Story homers twice in Rockies' 17-2 win over Braves

Trevor Story had two homers and a career-high six RBI, Jon Gray pitched six strong innings, and the Colorado Rockies broke out of an offensive slump in a big way to beat the Atlanta Braves 17-2 on Wednesday night.

Breakout hitting prospects of 2017: Ryan McMahon

If you could hurt a computer's feelings, McMahon did that with his rough 2016 season. Hitting .354/.401/.587 in the minors this year has mended those fences quite a bit.

Real or not? Rockies' offense gasping for air

The Rockies have scored three runs or fewer in eight straight games -- and three of those were even played at Coors Field. The finger can be pointed at the lower half of the order.

Blackmon, Springer hit rare milestone

With RBIs being partially dependent on opportunity, racking them up as a leadoff man is no easy task. George Springer drove in his 70th run of the season Tuesday to join an exclusive club. Charlie Blackmon did so in late July, after also accomplishing the feat in 2016.

Freeland activated for Tuesday start

The Rockies reinstated LHP Kyle Freeland (groin) from the 10-day disabled list to start Tuesday vs. the Braves. Colorado optioned LHP Zac Rosscup to Triple-A in a corresponding roster move. Freeland is 11-7 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 77/44 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 121 2/3 innings this season.

Bettis spins gem in return from cancer surgery

Chad Bettis drew a standing ovation when he took the mound for the first time since cancer treatment, then threw seven impressive innings Monday night as the Colorado Rockies beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

What a special night for Chad Bettis. In his return from cancer all he does is throw seven scoreless innings, throwing 90 pitches and recording 12 groundball outs. He won't get the win, however, as Julio Teheran also matched him with zeroes, giving us the chance for just the second 0-0 game through nine innings in Coors Field history.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Great story brewing in Colorado as Chad Bettis has tossed four scoreless innings in his first start of the season after undergoing cancer treatment. DJ LeMahieu made a diving stop for the final out of the fourth to save a run.

Power Rankings: Rockies on the rise

Although Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado have been perhaps the only consistent bats in the Rockies' lineup, lately they've gotten significant boosts from Gerardo Parra and Jonathan Lucroy.

Ranking contender managers: Bud Black

Black has tried to change the mindset about pitching at Coors Field, and his innovative ideas have gone a long way toward the team holding a firm grasp on a wild-card spot in mid-August.
