Ranking MLB defenses: Reds

The Reds have perhaps the single flashiest defender in Billy Hamilton, but he isn't doing it alone. In particular, first baseman Joey Votto has bounced back from a bizarre down year defensively.

Zack Cozart and great seasons you are probably overlooking

There was a day or two a couple weeks ago when Cozart led the NL in WAR. Following a short stay on the DL, the shortstop should become an interesting trade target as the deadline approaches.

Bryce Harper chose a good time for his first hit. The Nats slugger's 10th inning single - his only knock of the night - gave his team a 6-5 win over the Reds. The hit, combined with five scoreless innings from the beleaguered Washington bullpen, helped the Nationals keep their 9.5-game cushion over second-place Atlanta. It's Harper's third walk-off hit this season, tied for most in MLB.

Another short-ish night for Nats hurler Stephen Strasburg, who exits after allowing the Reds five runs on eight hits in five frames. After going six-plus innings in 13 of his first 14 starts this year, Strasburg has failed to go six in each of his last three outings.

Reds add Castillo, option Garrett

The Reds have recalled RHP Luis Castillo from Double-A Pensacola to make his major league debut against the Nationals on Friday night. LHP Amir Garrett has been optioned to Triple-A Louisville to open up a roster spot.

Christina Kahrl MLB Staff Writer

The Reds' rotation makeover gets underway, with Luis Castillo (No. 94 on Keith Law's Top 100 prospects) going tonight and Homer Bailey coming off the DL tomorrow. With their MLB-worst 6.12 ERA from the rotation, there's nowhere to go but up.
