Pedro Baez continues to pitch himself out of a key role in the Dodgers bullpen - - and maybe off the postseason roster entirely. Entering with a 2-1 lead in the seventh, he gave up four runs and picked up the loss. In August and September he's allowed 16 runs and 31 baserunners in 15 innings (and five HRs). It's time for Dave Roberts to stop relying on Baez to get key outs.

The Brewers will not go quietly into the night. They shut out the Pirates for the second game in a row, with Domingo Santana's fourth-inning home run holding up as the game's only run. Santana is having an unsung solid season (26 HR, .371 OBP) and Anthony Swarzak (1.99 ERA with the Brewers) continues to be one of the best bullpen acquisitions at the trade deadline.

The good news for the Red Sox? They won another extra innings affair, their 15th OT win of the year (tying a franchise record). The bad news? They went scoreless for 10 innings, then needed an infield hit, two walks, and a wild pitch to score the game's only run. A solo homer would've been so much easier. But the BoSox don't do homers. Not this year, anyway.

Yes, that's Carlos Santana kissing Francona's bald head for good luck before the game. Santana does a series of handshakes with each one of his teammates as part of his pregame routine, which he finishes by kissing Tito's head.

The Cubs beat the Rays 2-1 behind a solid pitching performance by Mike Montgomery and three relievers including Wade Davis who pitched in his fourth consecutive game while earning his 32nd save in 32 tries. He struck out the side in the ninth in front of a heavily pro-Cubs crowd. Kyle Schwarber's second inning HR and Javier Baez' RBI double in the fifth were enough offense thanks mostly to Montgomery who threw a one hitter without walking anyone over six innings. Brad Miller took him deep to break up the no-no but the Cubs got the victory and reduced their magic number to win the division to just nine with 12 games remaining.

ESPN Stats and Information

Alex Gordon hit the 5,694th HR in MLB this season. That sets an MLB record for HR in a season, breaking the mark previously set in 2000.

We have a new all-time record for home runs in one season. No, not that one. Barry Bonds is safe. But Alex Gordon just belted the 5,694th home run of 2017 off Ryan Tepera, breaking the previous record set in 2000. And with more than a week left in the season, the total should eventually end up at over 6,100 home runs. New MLB slogan: Home runs for everyone!

ESPN Stats and Information

Max Kepler and Alex Presley homered, the 5,692nd and 5,693rd HR in MLB this season. That ties the MLB record, meaning the next HR breaks the mark set in 2000.

ESPN Stats and Information

Brad Miller's home run for the Rays was the 5,691st in MLB this season. That's 3 shy of breaking the MLB record set in 2000.

ESPN Stats and Information

Mets C Travis d'Arnaud's home run was the 5,690th HR in MLB this season. That's 4 shy of breaking the record for HR in a season set in 2000.

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Mike Montgomery is through 5 innings and thrown 58 pitches without giving up a hit or walk. He's hit a batter while another reached via an error but that's all the Rays have achieved on offense so far.

ESPN Stats and Information

Darwin Barney of the Blue Jays homered. It's the 5,689th home run in MLB this season. That's 5 shy of breaking the MLB record for HR set in 2000.

Mike Montgomery is pitching fantastic so far. He hit the first batter but since then has been near perfect. He just pitched around an error by Addison Russell inducing two ground balls to end the 4th inning. He has yet to allow a hit or walk.

ESPN Stats and Information

A home-run burst (Yadier Molina, Yasmani Grandal, Paul DeJong, and Christian Yelich) in a 5-minute span gives MLB 5,687 home runs this season, 7 shy of the record set in 2000

Red Sox rookie Andrew Benintendi just hosed Manny Machado, who was trying to score from second on a Jonathan Schoop single. Wasn't particularly close either. It's Benintendi's 10th assist on the season. Among AL outfielders, only Melky Cabrera and Jarrod Dyson have more.
