Terry Collins expressed concern pregame about the status of Jon Niese's left knee. Well, Niese lasted only four batters -- allowing three to reach -- before departing with an escort from trainer Ray Ramirez on Tuesday at Busch Stadium. It matched the shortest start of Niese's career. He also lasted only one out at Texas on July 4, 2014, when he was struck in the lower back by a line drive. Robert Gsellman replaced Niese on Tuesday. It is Gsellman's MLB debut. The Mets chose not to use Monday's off day to skip Niese's start because of Steven Matz's shoulder issue and a determination Jacob deGrom could use extra rest.

The Cardinals have gone 10-8 without their Rookie of the Year candidate Aledmys Diaz, who has been on the disabled list with a broken thumb. Still, the team has felt his absence with iffy production at the shortstop position. Diaz appears to be 2-3 weeks away from returning. He took ground balls for the first time Tuesday. He will meet with a hand specialist Monday and hopes to start baseball activities next week. "I feel way better," he said.
