Chris Sale became the second-pitcher in Red Sox history with 300 K in a season, joining Pedro Martínez who did it in his Cy Young winning 1999 season.

Tough loss for the Brewers. With a chance to tie the Rockies for the second wild card and gain a game on the Cubs, Aaron Wilkerson made his first career start and didn't last long, but the Brewers still took a 4-3 lead in the seventh, Anthony Swarzak's throwing error on a little dribbler allowed a run to score in the eighth, however, and then Adam Frazier clocked his first career walk-off home run, with a two-run shot off closer Corey Knebel. The Pirates snap a seven-game skid, but that L1 is going to sting for the Brewers.

The Cubs lost 8-1 to the Rays as once again Jon Lester had a very shaky outing. He didn't make it out of the fifth while giving up runs in three different innings including the first when Steven Souza Jr homered off him. Lester has now given up a league leading 8 home runs in the opening inning this year. His ERA is 5.11 since the all star break after 7 Rays crossed the plate on 8 hits, 3 walks and three stolen bases. He also didn't strike out anyone in 4.1 innings. The Cubs offense did next to nothing off lefty Blake Snell but Lester's subpar performance has the biggest meaning for the team.

Chris Sale's most frequent strikeout victims in 2017: Aaron Judge and Steven Souza Jr. (10 apiece). Next up: Peter Bourjos and Jose Bautista (8 apiece).

Chris Sale records his 300th strikeout of the season by catching Ryan Flaherty looking. High-fives all around for Sale, who becomes only sixth lefty in AL history to fan 300 in a season and first since Randy Johnson in 1993.

Chris Sale with his 13th strikeout of the game and 300th of the season! He's the first AL pitcher to get there since Pedro Martinez in 1999 and just the seventh lefty in AL history, joining Rube Waddell, Sam McDowell, Randy Johnson, Mickey Lolich and Vida Blue.

Red Sox dugout and bullpen give Chris Sale standing ovations as he hits No. 300, on a strikeout of Ryan Flaherty.

One of the most cherished team record in sports was broken tonight. That's right, Steve Balboni's Royals record of 36 home runs in a season, set back in the World Series year of 1985, is no more. Mike Moustakas hit his 37th -- his first since September 1 and just his second since August 15 -- to finally pass up Balboni. May the man they called Bye Bye Balboni forever remain a Royals legend.

Chris Sale is coming back out for the bottom of the eighth. One strikeout away from 300. Davis, Hardy, Flaherty due to bat.

Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew catches up with Tito Francona. Carew, who survived a massive heart attack in 2015 and received a heart transplant, wanted to check up on Francona, who underwent a cardiac procedure for an irregular heartbeat in early July.

Chris Sale is at 299 strikeouts for the year. Boston bullpen quiet. Looks like Sale will go out for the 8th (and No. 300).

Jon Lester gave up 7 runs on 8 hits, 3 walks and a hit batter on Wednesday over 4.1 innings without striking anyone out. The Rays also stole 3 bases on him. The Cubs lefty simply hasn't been sharp, especially to start games, as his second half ERA ballooned to 5.11.

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Jon Lester gave up two stolen bases to Steven Souza in the fifth inning, both on errant throws, to first base and third base, respectively. Neither were scored as errors but if either were on target Souza would have been nabbed. Its only the 18th and 19th stolen bases against Lester this year, down from a league high of 44 in 2015. He gave up 28 stolen bases last season.
