The Cubs added three players to their 40 man roster including highly touted pitching prospects Albert Alzolay and Oscar De La Cruz along with infielder David Bote. The moves will make them unavailable from being selected in the Rule 5 draft next month at the winter meetings. Monday was a deadline for those 40 man additions.

In the Yankees' trade with the Marlins, they added $250,000 in international slot money. Extra dollars they can offer Shohei Ohtani.

As teams maneuver today to add players to their 40-man rosters, one name jumps out: the Phillies designated Mark Appel for assignment. The Astros famously selected Appel first overall in 2013, one spot ahead of Kris Bryant. Traded to the Phillies in the Ken Giles deal, he had a 5.60 ERA at Triple-A and spent time on the DL with a shoulder issue. His minor league track record has been abysmal and he looks like he'll be one of those great "What went wrong?" players of history. Let's hope the right organization can find a way to fix him.

The new Hall of Fame ballot is going to force some voters to make tough decisions. Newcomers Chipper Jones and Jim Thome look like first-ballot picks, but how will Omar Vizquel, Scott Rolen and Andruw Jones -- who combined for 29 Gold Gloves -- fare? Then you have holdovers Trevor Hoffman and Vladimir Guerrero, who just missed last year, plus Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, Curt Schilling, Larry Walker, Fred McGriff and Jeff Kent and all the PED candidates (Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, Sammy Sosa). Good luck.

The Red Sox have added left-hander Jalen Beeks and righties Chandler Shepherd and Ty Buttrey to the 40-man roster to protect them from being eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. The Sox's 40-man roster is now at capacity.
