Competition caution scheduled for lap 60

POSTPONED due to rain until Monday, April 24 at 1:00pm/et, TV=FOX
Persistent rain throughout the day on Sunday has forced the postponement of the race.

Race Coverage of the Food City 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway is scheduled for Monday, April 24, 2017.
Television (TV): FOX at 1:00 pm/et; green flag approx. 1:13pm/et
Radio: Performance Racing Network (PRN) and Sirius XM Satellite NASCAR Radio 90
Scheduled Race Re-Airs: TBA

Revised Bristol Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Pre-Race Schedule for Monday, April 24: (eastern time)
TBA

See the starting lineup for the Food City 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on the Texas Starting Lineup Page (pdf).

To the back: #37-Buescher (backup car)

Wave Around: how the wave around rule works: All vehicles between the leader and the caution vehicle at the start/finish line when the "one to go" signal is given by the starter are considered "Wave Around" eligible. "Wave Around" vehicles will not be permitted to enter pit road at any time during this yellow flag/caution period. "Wave Around" vehicles must receive the green flag on the race track before being permitted to enter pit road without a penalty. Vehicles under a penalty and the "Free Pass" vehicle will not be eligible to receive a "Wave Around".

Bristol Pit Rules: Bristol Motor Speedway operates under a plan where one-pit road will be used during pit stops under caution. Currently, Bristol remains the only track in the NASCAR Cup Series that utilizes two pit roads with 20 pit stalls on the front stretch and 20 on the backstretch (2 are closed on frontstretch, 1 is closed on backstretch). Teams that pit on the backstretch used to be at a competitive disadvantage. Since the spring 2002 race at Bristol, teams will enter pit road in Turn 2 (the current backstretch pit entrance) drive around down the backstretch and around Turns 3 and 4 and exit in Turn 1. Under green-flag conditions teams will enter and exit pit road under the current two-pit-road scheme.

Pit Stall Selections: The selections of pit stalls for the Food City 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway have been made.
With the field downsized to 40 cars, three pit stalls (21,22,43) have been eliminated, are not in play and don't count towards driving through more than three pit boxes.
Pole sitter (due to rain) #42-Larson chose pit stall 1, the first stall available [as do most pole sitters].
Outside pole sitter #24-Elliott took pit stall 20, the last stall on frontstretch pit road.
#78-Truex Jr., who starts 3rd, took the 23rd stall, the first stall on the backstretch pit road.
The final pit stall was taken by #1-McMurray, who starts 8th.
To see where the drivers/teams pit, see the pit selection chart on Jayski.com's Pit Stall Selection chart.(4-22-2017)

Weather could be an issue at Bristol this weekend NASCAR has had a good run of seven weeks of mostly rain free weather. The only exceptions were the Cash at Daytona, a non points race, and the Friday at Martinsville where practice and qualifying were both washed out. It appears the dry weather luck runs out at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend. Forecasting the weather around Bristol Motor Speedway is always complicated, especially when you are dealing with the terrain around the track. The mountains and hills that make up the region can give meteorologist's fit. While we expect rain showers and storms to fall during the weekend not every moment of every day is soaking wet. We expect some dry time as we go through the weekend. The question is, which days are drier than the others? (see full post and forecasts at SB Nation / Brian Neudorff) or check out the Bristol Race Info page - weather link section.[More](4-20-2017)

NASCAR Overtime (not called Green-White-Checkered anymore) Race Procedure: NASCAR allows a maximum of three restart attempts prior to the White Flag under NASCAR's Green-White-Checkered flag finish. If the leader has taken the White Flag and the caution flag is displayed, the field is frozen and the race will not be restarted. Previously, there was only one restart attempt. The procedure applies to all three national series. See rule and notes on the NASCAR Overtime rules/news/stats page.

Bristol rainout puts Kyle Larson on pole for Food City 500 For the third time this season, #42-Kyle Larson will start a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race from the pole. And for the second time this year, he gained the top starting spot not through qualifying in time trials, but with an assist from Mother Nature. Because of intermittent rain at Bristol Motor Speedway, NASCAR canceled qualifying in favor of necessary practice for teams in the Cup, XFINITY and K&N Pro Series East Series. With the field for Sunday's Food City 500 ordered according to owner points, Larson will start up front as the series leader, with second-place #24-Chase Elliott beside him. Those are familiar positions for both drivers, who started in the same spots when rain wiped out qualifying for the April 2 race at Martinsville. Interestingly, Larson posted his worst finish of the season in that race - 17th. Otherwise, in the six events since he ran 12th in the season-opening Daytona 500, the driver of the #42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet has a victory from the pole at Fontana, California, and four second-place finishes. Elliott, on the other hand, finished third at Martinsville, matching his best result of the season. #78-Martin Truex Jr. will start third on Sunday, followed by Team Penske teammates #2-Brad Keselowski and #22-Joey Logano. Keselowski is the only two-time winner this season, having gone to Victory Lane at both Atlanta and Martinsville.(NASCAR Wire Service)

Group qualifying under the three-round qualifying format:

• Round 2 -- The 24 fastest from the first round will have 10 minutes to post a second-round qualifying time, with the 12 fastest advancing to a third round. Those not advancing will earn starting positions 13 through 24 based on time, again in descending order.
• Round 3 -- The final round will be five minutes in length. The fastest times from this session will determine the first (Coors Light Pole Award) through 12th starting positions.
There will be a seven-minute break between each round; teams may make adjustments to their entries only during the individual breaks. They will not be allowed to jack the vehicle or raise the hood, and once the car or truck enters the garage, it will no longer be permitted to return to the track for additional qualifying attempts.

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

TIRE NOTES & FACTS

Fast Facts for April 21-23, 2017

Tire: Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials

Set limits:
Cup: 4 sets for practice, 1 set for qualifying/start of race and 7 sets for the race;
Xfinity: 6 sets for the event

Tire Codes: Left-side -- D-4416; Right-side -- D-4526

Tire Circumference: Left-side -- 87.64 in. (2,226 mm); Right-side -- 88.43 in. (2,246 mm)

Minimum Recommended Inflation:
Left Front -- 20 psi; Left Rear -- 18 psi;
Right Front -- 43 psi; Right Rear -- 40 psi

Storyline - At Bristol, Good Racing is as Simple as Black (Rubber) and White (Concrete): Goodyear brings a unique tire combination that matches up well with the concrete surface at Bristol. This tire set-up lays down rubber quickly, which helps create multiple racing grooves and makes for the highly competitive racing that Bristol is known for. While Bristol is a short track, it also has speedway characteristics. Goodyear's left- and right-side tire constructions are built with both in mind -- optimizing handling, as well as withstanding the loads and speeds generated by the steep banking.

Notes: Teams in both the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same Goodyear tire set-up at Bristol this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that NASCAR teams have run at Bristol since August 2014 . . . Bristol is the only track at which NASCAR teams are scheduled to run either of these two tire codes . . . unlike on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, on which teams generally do not run inner liners in their tires, teams are required to run liners in their right-side tires only at Bristol . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
