Erik Jones was participating in a segment for NASCAR on NBC/NBCSN when he rounded Turn 4 doing about 155 mph at Charlotte Motor Speedway and clipped the crossover steps that someone had left along the front stretch wall.
Jones thought the track was clear as he'd been given the go-ahead from the NASCAR tower but that wasn't the case. For his part, Jones never really saw the crossover steps and was just far enough away from the wall, he said, to barely clip the lower section. It got his attention but he wasn't injured.
"I went out to make some laps and apparently the ladder was still out there to get up across the front stretch," Jones said. "I never really knew what I hit, I didn't think it was that big honestly, it didn't sound that big. But yeah, it was pretty exciting and I am sure it tore the car up - it can't be in good shape.
