Tommy Fleetwood headed into last year's Open Championship as the home town hero and one of the favorites, yet opened with a 76. His response was a Friday 69 to reach his first ever Open weekend. "One of the best rounds I've ever played," he said, before adding that his confidence is high this week. "The thing about finishing second in the U.S. Open is that it's proof. I've got the game to compete, and eventually win, the majors. That's what it's all about."

The Open Championship requires imagination. Jordan Spieth hopes this week at Carnoustie triggers something that has been lost for him. "I needed feel and imagination in my game. I think I've gotten too technical and tried to be too perfect."

Jordan Spieth, the defending champion, returned the Claret Jug this week. "Hopefully it'll only be for a week."

Tiger Woods starts the week ranked 71st in the world. A long-stated goal to make the WGC-Bridgestone field at Firestone in two weeks means he needs to be among the top 50 by Sunday or July 30. World ranking projections suggest he will need to finish no worse than a tie for eighth this week at Carnoustie in order to earn a spot at Firestone, where Woods won 8 times, including his last PGA Tour victory in 2013.
