Ten high-stakes games for 2017: Texas A&M at UCLA

This isn't a November affair, but fans on both sides will be watching the Sept. 3 season opener closely to get a pulse on the season -- and their coaches.

One positive from an early signing date is that coaches will know who's serious, who isn't and who just isn't ready. Kevin Sumlin sees the early date working because it will give coaching staffs a better perspective about how kids are really feeling. "If I guy doesn't sign in December, he's not committed. He has a reservation."

Like Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin doesn't like the idea of early official visits. He doesn't like the idea of not getting to know these players better, especially when trying to maneuver around the time in which coaches can't make in-home visits during the spring, yet recruits can officially visit.

New Bucs safety Justin Evans leaps up to catch a pass during defensive back drills. He looks a little choppy in his transitions today. He's still rangy, can make plays on the ball and can hit. They love his passion too.

Houston picking up a graduate transfer from the SEC: Texas A&M defensive lineman Reggie Chevis told ESPN.com on Wednesday that he will spend his final year of eligibility with the Cougars. Chevis arrived in 2013 as a 4-star linebacker but was later converted to defensive line. The 6-2, 295-pound Chevis played in all 13 games for the Aggies in 2016, recording 25 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. Chevis graduates this month and will be eligible to play at Houston immediately.

Texas A&M WR Josh Reynolds took a visit with the Rams three or four weeks ago. "I loved it," he told local reporters. "I loved the vibe, I loved the energy they had, and it seemed like they liked me." On what he brings, Reynolds said: "Definitely intensity. I'm a playmaker and can play pretty much anywhere they need. I'm a winner, and I'd love to help this team win."
