The Division I Council did not take action on the issue Wednesday of allowing redshirts in football to retain eligibility if they play in four games or fewer -- but the proposal is scheduled to go to vote in April and could go into effect this August. The proposal appears to have considerable support. If passed, it would replace the medical hardship rule. Said Miami AD Blake James, chair of the council: "I don't think it's right for a young man to lose a redshirt over what may be a need for a team in a competitive situation to have to find a player to play. Whether it's a bowl game or a game later in the season, personally I struggle with why we would take away the redshirt if they stay within a certain percentage [of games.]"

Miami is still about $1 million away on the initial $34 million price tag on the indoor facility. It launched a crowdfunder in late August that has raised $800,000, thanks in large part to the team's success in 2017.

The current weight room (left) will connect to the indoor through three doors that will be built into the existing structure.

Each of these steel beams weighs between 6,000-7,000 pounds and interlocks to form the structure. Much of the steel has been pre-fabricated in Alabama, so all the crews on the ground have to do is bolt them together in the right places.

The entire structure is hurricane rated to withstand Category 5 winds. It's also going to be air conditioned and feature giant windows across the top that allow in natural light (and palm tree views, too).

The office where Mark Richt currently works (middle of picture) will be completely stripped down and redone. As part of the project, a 10,000-square foot mezzanine deck will be made, featuring new coaches offices and meeting rooms. They will each have windows overlooking the indoor field and connect to an additional 15,000 square feet of renovated football offices and meeting rooms.

To date, general contractor Lemartec has poured over 3,000 cubic yards of concrete to form the facility's foundation. Project superintendent Carlos Padron said the concrete gets poured starting at 3 a.m., mainly so the trucks avoid traffic getting to campus. The concrete is only good for 90 minutes after it is made, so time is of the essence. About 10 trucks pour at a time, and make five trips each to the facility. It's a process that takes roughly five hours.

Construction on Miami's new 82,000-square foot indoor practice facility is right on schedule, with a target completion date in time for the start of fall practice.

One of the common denominators of recent national champions is that not many of them have played true road nonconference games. Of the last 10 national champs, only Clemson in 2016 (at Auburn), FSU in 2013 (at Florida), Alabama in 2011 (at Penn State) and Florida in 2008 (at FSU) played regular-season games on the road in an opponent's home stadium. Going back to the 2000 season, Miami in 2001 is the only national champ to play two true road nonconference games (at Penn State and at FSU).

Indiana adds offensive lineman Nick Linder, a graduate transfer from Miami who started 26 games for the Hurricanes from 2014 to 2016. Linder announced in August that he was transferring from Miami. He started 22 games at center in 2015 and 2016.
