Hokies big FPI favorites against UNC

Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente has 15 wins in his first two seasons, the most since B.C. Cubbage in the 1921-22 season. North Carolina has to win out to gain bowl eligibility, with FPI giving the Tar Heels a 0.1 percent chance of doing so starting Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2/ESPN App).

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora was asked about being in uncharted territory with a 1-6 team: "There's nothing that I like about it. We talk about adversity all the time as a football team, that overcoming adversity is one of the most important things you can do. This is just another form of adversity. We haven't changed anything. Our focus is on this day and being the best that we can be this day and then when Saturday gets here, it will all be about Virginia Tech."

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora went with Brandon Harris at quarterback, but the result was the same. He threw for just 46 yards, and North Carolina fell to 0-4 in the ACC for the first time since 2006 (started 0-6, finished 2-6).

Virginia is 5-1 for the first time since 2007 and needs just one more win to become bowl eligible. Meanwhile, North Carolina fell to 1-6 and needs to win out to make it back to the postseason.

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham on the notion that the Tar Heels escaped NCAA punishment for vast academic improprieties: "We had some things that occurred that we haven't been proud of. We've been very open and transparent in attempting to follow the various processes we've been involved in … Unfortunately, sometimes the behavior that you're not proud of just doesn't quite fit into a bylaw or a rule or something, and that's what we've been talking about for five years. We're not proud of the behavior, but we didn't think it violated the bylaw."

From the NCAA's July 17 letter to UNC prior to its Committee on Infractions hearing: UNC "student-athletes received access to and assistance in certain courses that was not generally available to other students." That's what North Carolina argued against.

Myron Medcalf ESPN Staff Writer

North Carolina successfully argued that the NCAA could not prove student-athletes received any additional benefits that other students in the general body failed to receive.

While the alleged "sham" courses in the African-American Studies department at North Carolina took center stage for nearly four years, the NCAA's main claim against UNC was that it had offered student-athletes impermissible "extra" benefits through these classes.
