Sumlin on Rose Bowl at Arizona: 'It's gonna happen' (0:47)

Kyle Bonagura ESPN Staff Writer

The first question Kevin Sumlin was asked at his introductory press conference at Arizona: "How significant is it to be the first black head [football] coach at this university?" He noted that it's his third time being a head coach and the third time he's been asked that question. "It shouldn't be overlooked, but you hope in time – in the next 5, 10 years – that is not the first question you get," Sumlin said, "and I'm not being disrespectful to that accomplishment.”

Arizona AD Dave Heeke: "I want to be clear, Kevin [Sumlin] is the only person we offered the job to."

Arizona officially announced Kevin Sumlin as its next head coach. “I am humbled and honored to join the Arizona Family,” Sumlin said in a statement. “With a strong foundation already in place, we will work quickly to assemble an elite coaching staff and immediately begin the work of establishing our culture, recruiting future Wildcats, and connecting with Wildcats past and present. We will win championships.

As first reported by SI's Bruce Feldman, a source confirms that former Texas A&M OC Noel Mazzone will follow Sumlin to Arizona in the same capacity. In Mazzone's first year with the Aggies in 2016, A&M was one of a handful of FBS team to average over 200 rushing and passing yards per game, while gaining 467.1 total yards per game. Those numbers dropped in 2017, as A&M averaged just 406.8 YPG and were held under 100 yards rushing five times.

Sumlin a perfect fit for Arizona (0:40)

The pairing of coach Kevin Sumlin and quarterback Khalil Tate should produce some offensive fireworks in Arizona.

Edward Aschoff ESPN Staff Writer

Source close to Kevin Sumlin said he's "fired up" about his new opportunity to coach at Arizona. One of Sumlin's first orders of business will be developing QB Khalil Tate into more of a passer. You have to imagine that he's excited to work with a QB who was second in the Pac-12 with 1,411 rushing yards and averaged 9.2 YPC. Improving on his 144.6 passing YPG and getting a better TD-INT number (14-9) will push him toward the top of the conference.

With Kevin Sumlin headed to Arizona, it will only open up more scrutiny for Arizona State's decision to hire Herm Edwards. Many viewed Sumlin as a good fit at ASU and if he outperforms Edwards -- which seems likely -- it will be a major source of frustration for ASU fans who wanted Sumlin in the first place.

SOURCES: Arizona is hiring former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin as its next head coach. An official announcement is expected shortly. Sports Illustrated first reported the hire. Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin also interviewed for the position, along with Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo.

Kevin Sumlin to Arizona is a solid fit. The coach has familiarity recruiting the area (landed several of the state's top prospects, including Christian Kirk while at Texas A&M) and his offensive style paired with QB Khalil Tate's skills should provide for some real fireworks.

Navy's Niumatalolo pulls out of Arizona job hunt

After interviewing with Arizona brass about the open football coaching job, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo told ESPN's Heather Dinich that he will remain with Navy with "unfinished business to finish."

Heather Dinich ESPN Senior Writer

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo sent me a text today confirming he is staying at Navy and withdrawing his name from consideration for the Arizona job. It read: "After much prayer and pondering, it has become crystal clear the USNA is a special place with special people and I LOVE IT HERE!!! Plus I have unfinished business to finish."

Navy announced on Sunday that football coach Ken Niumatalolo is staying with the Midshipmen and no longer considering the Arizona vacancy.

Arizona has not offered its head-coaching position to any candidates, nor have any negotiations started, according to a source close to the search process. Candidate interviews are still taking place. These things can move quickly but nothing is done, I'm told.

Arizona's coaching search seems to be entering the home stretch. Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin and former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin are in the mix, but Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is emerging as another strong candidate to watch. Niumatalolo is 84-48 in 10 seasons at Navy.

Two names I'm hearing are in the mix for Arizona's coaching vacancy: Troy head coach Neal Brown and Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin, the former head coach at Eastern Washington. Brown is 25-13 at Troy, while Baldwin just completed his first season on the Cal staff.
