Could the Detroit Tigers release Victor Martinez as part of their next round of payroll pruning?

Rumor Central

The 38-year-old designated hitter is scheduled to make $18 million next season, and Evan Woodbury of MLive.com suggests “it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Tigers eat the contract and wish Martinez well in retirement.”

Martinez has a .255/.324/.372 slash line with 10 homers this season, well below his career average of .298/.364/.462.

The Tigers slashed about $42 million in salary commitments for 2018 when they traded Justin Verlander and Justin Upton on August 31. Detroit is expected to shop veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler this winter, as well.

Detroit (62-94) is in last place in the AL Central and announced last week that manager Brad Ausmus will not return next season.
